Services
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter Ants sometimes build nests in the timbers of buildings. Carpenter ants burrow through wood ruining the value of your property and making costly repairs necessary. They are large, black ants, either winged or wingless, measuring up to 1" long. Unlike termites, ants have narrow waists. Also, on winged ants, there are four wings of unequal length with front wings being longer than the hind. Lastly, carpenter ant nests are cleaner than termites, with no mud tunnels. They do not eat the wood they nest in it , so look for small piles of sawdust accumulating under small holes in open wood.
Ants
Though ants in lawns provide valuable protection from other lawn pests, ants indoors are not just a nuisance but can weaken foundations. Houses built in Indiana often have serious ant problems. The insects nest under the foundations and enter through cracks and other openings. Ants carry diseases and spread food poisoning salmonella and other bacteria.
Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs (Bedbugs) have become a recent epidemic in major cities and hotels in the US that cater to international travel. These insects infest mattresses, walls and whole homes , where they hide until nighttime when they feed on blood, like mosquitos and fleas. Bed bug bites may eventually produce red welts that itch. The bites are not typically felt; however, frequent feeding can disrupt people’s sleep and heavy rates of feeding can result in significant blood loss. They can eventually lead to anemia, especially in malnourished children. Agents of human disease have been found in Bed Bugs, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and parasitic worms. Current research suggests that none of these agents reproduce or multiply within bed bugs, and very few survive for any length of time inside a bed bug. They can be identified as oval, reddish-brown, and wingless with flat bodies. Adult bed bugs are about 1/4"’ long. They possess long, slender legs and antennae. A long, segmented proboscis (beak) that extends forward when the bug takes a blood meal lies beneath the body and projects backwards between the legs when at rest. Immature Bed Bugs resemble adults, but are smaller and less deeply pigmented. There are special preparation methods for bed bugs on our bed bug control page.
Bees
Bees and wasps can be frightening for children and adults alike. Some bees, such as Yellow Jackets can be highly aggressive when defending nests. A nest that invades your home can quickly turn an outside nuisance into a home pest with regular stings, honey soaking through walls, or attract scavenging insects and rodents. Carpenter Bees can cause damage and others bees aggressively defend their nests by stinging. Some people are allergic to stings which can cause breathing complications.
Fleas
Fleas are more than itchy, they can cause minor allergic reactions, anemia, or carry tapeworms. They have been known to actually kill small pets. Fleas are tiny (1/16" long), agile, dark-colored, wingless insects with tube-like mouths to feed on the blood of hosts. The bodies are laterally compressed with long legs for jumping. Flea larvae resemble white worms with a distinct, brown head, no eyes or legs. The larvae take a few weeks to develop and hide in floor cracks, under rug edges and in furniture. If adult fleas are found, both the pet and the premises must be treated immediately.
Roaches
Roaches (Cockroaches) are common to the entire world. Indoor roaches contaminate food and household items. Indoor cockroaches spread through grocery bags, boxes and other items moved from place to place. Our homes supply them with the food, warmth, and water necessary for their nesting sites hidden inside walls, cabinets, and closets. They are active at night, nocturnal, so can go undetected. Look for feces, small black specs on counter tops, and discarded shell casings in the morning. Daytime sightings can mean a heavy infestation and are a sign that you will need professional pest control services.
Spiders
Overall, spiders are actually good at helping us manage other pests. However, certain spiders can be dangerous to family members and pets and a lot of people have phobias toward them. In particular, the black widow and brown recluse spiders are venomous and harmful to humans.
Termites
Termites burrow into your home to feed on the available wood. Like ant colonies, termite colonies have a variety of workers suited to their function: nymphs, soldiers, and workers. While nymphs and soldiers are responsible for reproduction and protection, home owners will see the mud tubes of workers who provide the food and infrastructure of the termite nest. Read our Termite Control page for more information.
Mice
Mice and rats have long been known to carry disease and be destructive to homes, buildings, and property. Our premises provide the food, water, and breeding places necessary to them. Both mice and rats are smart and difficult to catch. They harbor and transmit a number of diseases, and can introduce disease-carrying parasites, such as fleas and mites, into your home. They also gnaw on wires which can lead to fires and service outages.
